 Adverse Drug Events
Medication safety is an important component of patient safety. Many patients are at high risk of harmful, unintended reactions to their medicines at doses normally used for treatment; such reactions are known as adverse drug events (ADEs). These reactions may occur at any point in the medication administration process. There are several reasons for this. Some medications are inherently risky, so the use of such medicines needs to be strictly controlled. In addition, some patients take many medications and see many health care professionals, increasing the opportunity for ADEs.

To decrease ADEs, MetaStar is bringing community pharmacists, clinics, physicians, and others together as teams in a national Patient Safety Pharmacy Services Collaborative (PSPC) sponsored by the Health Resources and Services Administration. The goal is to decrease the number of ADEs suffered by their patients.
